Eckford, John & John R.

London; carvers and gilders (fl.1814–1881)

John Eckford of 17 Water Street (or Lane), Bridewell Precinct, was a carver and gilder and a dealer in paintings (1814–29). He purchased Sun Insurance policies on 12 September 1814 for £700 of which stock, utensils and goods in trust accounted for £300; on 21 September 1818 for £300 on a let house in Crosby Row, Walworth; and on 14 December 1820 for £650, including £450 on houses in tenure at 7 Crown Court, Dorset Street, and 4 George Row; and £200 on a private house at 8 George Row [The London Archives (TLA), Sun MS vol. 461, ref. 897352; vol. 480, ref. 946122; vol. 487, ref. 974492].  He was then listed at 48 Lothbury (1826-27). 

Probably the same John Eckford listed as a carver & gilder at 59 Greek Street in 1845 [London Post Office Directory, 1845]. By 1851 father & son were working together (aged 49 & 20) and living at 30 Queen Street, Marylebone [1851 census].

John Eckford was at 8 Rose Street, Soho (1865-c.1871). John Eckford jnr. was living at 10 Rose Street, Soho (1861) and in Kentish Town by 1881 [London Post Office Directory, 1865 & 1871; 1871 & 1881 census].
