The son of Josiah snr, he was apparently taken on for the final years of his apprenticeship in 1762 by Richard Gillow, who claimed that in order to make a wider variety of work than he had been accustomed to under his old master he ought to extend his apprenticeship [letter of 14 September 1762 from Richard Gillow to Mr. Richard Downtaine, Settle, Yorks].
