Dobyns, John

London; upholder and undertaker (fl.1752–1771)

The son of John Dobyns, printer of Blackfriars, apprenticed to Thomas Dobyns on 6 August 1752 and admitted a freeman of the Upholders’ Company by servitude on 6 September 1759. Brother of Edward Harris Dobyns.

Dobyns was declared bankrupt in 1770 [Gents Magazine, December 1770] and was recorded with a warehouse in Conduit Street, Hanover Square.

A sale of stock by Christie's on bankruptcy was held on 21–22 January 1771, consisting of ‘A Variety of Cabinet and Upholstery Goods, in Four-Post Bedsteads, Tables, Wilton and Scotch Carpeting, some very elegant Pier Glasses, Pictures, Stoves, some Plate and white Copper Candlesticks’; also wallpaper, feathers and funeral palls' [Guildhall Library, Upholders’ Company records and Livery lists].

Recorded at Swallow Street in 1778.
