Deacon, C. W.

High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire; chair & couch manufacturer (fl.1878-1887)

The Furniture Gazette, 5 January 1878, described Deacon as the contributor of some fine upholstered chairs for the triumphal chair arch made for the Queen’s visit to High Wycombe. At this date he was located at two addresses: Great Easton Street and West End Road Chair Works.

Deacon was also the maker of a presentation ‘Elizabethan’ oak hall chair for J. Vernon, J. P., on his retirement as Captain of the Volunteer Fire Brigade in High Wycombe, of which Deacon was also a member [The Furniture Gazette, 21 January 1882].  Deacon was listed in The Furniture Gazette: Classified List of the Furniture, Upholstery, and Allied Trades (1886) at 1 Church Square and West End Road. 

The Furniture Gazette, 1 February 1887, reported a recent visit to Deacon’s showrooms and his firm’s work as makers of upholstered chairs and largely stuffed suites. The article mentioned the range of its patterns and designs and that Deacon kept abreast of current fashions. His factory also made large quantities of Windsor and cane-seated chairs. He supplied the wholesale and export market.
