J. Curran, a working woodcarver, in his report on the artisans showing at the 1889 Paris Exhibition acknowledged that carving machines might be useful cutting tracery and Gothic work but as far as general use was concerned, they were a poor investment. Curran warned against investing in carving machines because he alleged that 'in every case there has been a screw loose that nothing could tighten it, or save these instruments from falling into decay".
