A label on the back of a gilt sconce, c. 1720, affixed when it was renovated in the early Victorian period is printed  ‘J. COOMBES, Carver, Gilder, Looking Glass & Picture FRAME MANUFACTURER, 49 Holywell St. near St. Clement’s Church, STRAND, the Lowest Prices for Ready Money EVERY DESCRIPTION Of FANCY WOOD FRAMES, LOOKING GLASSES, RESILVERED & POLISHED. OLD FRAMES REGILT & MODERNISED. MOULDINGS FOR ROOMS &C.’ (illus. Gilbert (1996), figs 219-221). Recorded in 1839 and listed in the London Post Office Directory 1845 at the same address.
