Cleland, Alexander (1792-1825)
Cleland, Alexander, London, cm (1792–1825). Initially at 28 Peter St, Soho, where on 18 May 1792 he took out insurance cover of £200, the utensils and stock in the house and workshops accounting for £180 of this. He subscribed to Sheraton's Drawing Book, 1793. By 1802 he had moved to 14 Charles St, Middlx Hospital, at which address he was to remain until 1825. From 1812 in certain years directories list him as an u. In 1803 he was included in the list of master cabinet makers in Sheraton's Cabinet Dictionary. At this period and in the years that followed the business increased in size, and in 1810 insurance cover amounted to £1,100. This included £500 for stock, utensils and goods in trust in his dwelling house, in the women's workroom, warehouse and cabinet workshop, and a further £400 for similar items in a warehouse behind and above it, and in an open shed and yard.
