Chubbard, Samuel

Liverpool, Lancs.; carver, gilder and glass grinder (b.1741–d.1807)

From the 1780s also referred to as a cabinetmaker on a number of occasions. Initially at Williamson Street but in 1774 at 16 Liver Street where he remained until 1781. He then moved to 17 Lord Street staying here until at least 1791. His address in 1796 was however 44 Harrington Street with a warehouse at 3 Lord Street. He took the following apps: William Turner (1784 and free 1802), George Smith (1789 and free 1796), Thomas Hignett (1797 and free 1806), Edward Jones (1797 and free 1806), Hugh Jones (1796 and free 1806) and William Belshaw (1797 and free 1807). He died in February 1807 aged 66 at his house in Kensington, London Rd, Liverpool. [D; Liverpool freemen reg.; Liverpool Chronicle, 11 February 1807].Gillows bought a sample of twenty-four plates from him in December 1777, the year he began glass grinding. They informed him that none need be silvered as they did that themselves. In November 1791 the Gillow archive notes that ‘Mr. Chubbard cabinet maker' was working in Lord Street, Liverpool. One of his workmen was an ex-Gillow journeyman, Joseph Lindsay, a joiner who in 1791 had applied to his sick club in Lancaster for sickness relief.
