Caldwell, William snr. & jnr.
London; cabinet makers and upholsterers (fl.1783–1826)
William snr. was in Wigmore Street in 1783 when purchasing an insurance policy for £800 of which £300 was for utensils, stock and goods; and at 11 Wigmore Street in 1785. In 1791 purchased a joint insurance policy with Robert Stone, an ironmonger of 13 Oxford Street on a property at 32 Welbeck Street, which was tenanted by a Mr Wells [The London Archives (TLA), Sun MS vol. 313, refs 485226 and 583072; 1785 Bailey's British Directory].
William (possibly the son of William snr. and Elizabeth Caldwell) initially traded from 12 Wigmore Street, Cavendish Square. In 1811 the business was referred to as Caldwell & Co. By this date his occupation had changed from cabinet maker to upholsterer. In 1826 the firm was listed at 4 Dorset Street, Manchester Square. In 1835 the number changed to 2.
