Born in Scotland about 1757, John was in Charleston in 1850 when recorded in the Seventh Federal Census, living with his wife, Jane and seven other members of the Cadlwell family, ranging in age from three to twenty-nine, some, if not all, presumably his children. Also resident in the household was James Clotworthy, a 17-year-old Irish upholsterer, who was probably an apprentice,
