Benjamin, H. L.

London; chair maker, cabinet maker, upholsterer, designer, fancy furniture maker (fl. 1883-c.1900)

Benjamin had worked with the late J. W. H. Vaughan (known as H. Vaughan). By 1883 he set up his own business at 41 Scrutton Street, Curtain Road.  He produced many of the ranges previously made by Vaughan including the Beaconsfield, Portland & Albany dining & drawing room suites. The suites comprised 6 small chairs, 2 easy chairs and a couch, sideboard and dining table, priced from £20 [The Furniture Gazette, 20 October & 3 November 1883].

The Furniture Gazette (13 September 1884) reported Benjamin was producing the ‘Eureka’ dining room suite .

The Furniture Gazette (8 May 1885) recorded Benjamin’s move to larger premises at 27 Great Eastern Street and the same publication (1 November 1885) noted he had issued several sheets of designs of his new sideboards and fancy goods, all made on his own premises. He was recorded as cabinet maker in The Furniture Gazette: Classified List of the Furniture, Upholstery and Allied Trades, 1886 and an advertisement for the firm in The Furniture Gazette, 1 January 1886, illustrated an upholstered dining chair.

In 1889 he was recorded at Scrutton Street off Great Eastern Road and in 1898 he moved to larger premises.
