Beetles, C. C.

93 & 102 Herbert Street, New North Road & 45 Essex Road, London; bamboo furniture manufacturers (fl.1894-1900)

This firm specialised mostly in library furniture with a large variety of writing desks and bookcases.   An advertisement in Furniture & Decoration and the Furniture Gazette, May 1894, featured a revolving bookcase described as a ‘dainty little article, and as it is made of the very best materials, is suitable for a high class drawing room’ (illus. Walkling (1979) p. 58). In 1895 Beetles was also making a ‘leading feature of bamboo bedroom suites, very dainty ... at the same time useful ... Construction is by no means neglected, for they are as strong as their hardwood competitors’. These bedroom suites probably comprised a wardrobe, wash stand, chest of drawers and two chairs, with the beds being only made to special order.
