Beckmann, Auguste (1871-1886)

Beckmann Brothers; Beckmann, Charles Frederick, Auguste & B. (sometimes spelt Beckman)

London; carvers, gilders, looking glass maker, picture frame makers, fancy goods importer and print seller  (1871-1886)

The Beckmann Brothers were recorded in the 1871 London Post Office as carvers & gilders at 27 Cowcross Street.  One of the brothers, Charles Frederick, was born c.1838 in Germany and granted naturalisation in UK, aged 40, in 1878.  He was recorded as ‘formerly of Beckmann Brothers’ in Cowcross Street as a picture frame maker in The Furniture Gazette (5 June 1880).  On his death in 1899 he was described as a fancy goods importer and print seller of 26 & 27 Cowcross Street and Crouch End.  

Kelly’s Post Office Directory and the 1871 census recorded Auguste (or Augustus) Beckmann (aged 35)at 228 Pentonville Road as carver & gilder and also as looking glass & picture frame maker. 

The Furniture Gazette (8 September & 27 October 1883) recorded the liquidation of the individual businesses of B. Beckman & A. Beckman, with both listed with the same address of Pentonville Road, Euston Road and Woodstock Road, Finsbury Park. 

Nothing further is known about B. Beckmann but Auguste Beckmann was recorded back in business at the Pentonville Road address in The Furniture Gazette: Classified List of the Furniture, Upholstery, and Allied Trades, 1886.
