Amos, John

Little Gonerby, Grantham, Lincolnshire.; Windsor chair maker and turner (fl.1814–d. 1842)

John Amos advertised in the Stamford Mercury, 7 November 1823: ‘Two Journeymen Chair-makers wanted immediately; one Windsor, and one Turnpin Chair-maker who can bottom’. Numerous Windsor chairs are known impressed on the seat edge or bottom near splat ‘AMOS GRANTHAM’. There is an example at Temple Newsam House, Leeds(illus, Gilbert (1991), pl. 173).
