Abrahams, Barnet
London; cabinet maker (fl.1904-1955)
Abrahams was brought to London as a one-year old child in 1891 and probably went to the Jews’ Free School until 1904. He learnt his trade in East End workshops, and in the First World War worked on the construction of Army huts and other war supplies, possibly in the Harris Lebus factory. In 1920 he went into partnership and formed Mitchell & Barnet, specialising in china cabinets and bookcases in Hoxton Market. During the 2nd World War the firm amalgamated with I Abel & Son in Hertford Road, N1 to make Utility furniture until 1948. The firm then went back to producing china cabinets and became one of the largest East End companies in this market. In 1955 Barnet Abrahams joined the firm of his son, Gerald, Universal Fittings (Kingsland) Ltd in Hackney Road, E2, one of the largest suppliers of fittings and fixtures for furniture and allied trades in the UK.
