Published by on 26 June 2023
The Project

British and Irish Furniture Makers Online (BIFMO) is delighted to offer the opportunity for two interns to work with original documents in the National Museum of Scotland, scanning and recording trade card, letter and billheads and similar material donated to the Museum by Graham & Hilda Gadd of London. This unique archive contains over 1000 examples of nineteenth-century British furniture makers documentary material. The scanned images will be used to inform and illustrate biographical accounts on the BIFMO site

Internship

The short project offers successful candidates the opportunity to learn more about nineteenth-century British design, manufacture, and retail, and to work with archives using digital skills. It will be undertaken in the autumn of this year. Each of the two interns will be required to commit to six, seven-hour days (or the equivalent in half days) with the first three days working together in the Museum under the guidance and supervision of Stephen Jackson, Senior Curator, Furniture and Woodwork, Art & Design) and Jill Dye (Library Services Manager). The remaining days will involve processing images, searching the BIFMO database and recording information on spreadsheets.

A stipend of £60 per day per intern will be paid, in addition to an allowance of £100 to cover travel, and accommodation reimbursement for non-Edinburgh residents of up to £200. These positions are made possible through the generous support of the Worshipful Company of Art Scholars.
